Zipcar dives into the Hampstead Ponds debate as it pledges to cover the cost of 2,500 swims
As the decision on whether the City of London Corporation will introduce a compulsory entrance fee to Hampstead Ponds draws closer, Zipcar UK is the latest London organisation to dive into the debate.
Zipcar, the UK’s largest car-sharing club, is supporting Londoners by committing to cover the entry costs for 2,500 wild swimmers in March.
Since the potential entry fee increase was first announced in January, protecting the accessibility of North London’s world-famous wild swimming spot has become Zipcar UK’s latest initiative in making London a greener and cleaner place to live. From 11th March, the date of the ruling, Zipcar UK will run an initiative to enable thousands of Londoners to continue to enjoy the resource for free.
The plan to switch Hampstead Ponds entry fee from a £2 voluntary donation a compulsory £4 ticket price comes after it was revealed that just 3.7% of visitors make use of the “Honesty Box” and make a donation. To counteract this, Zipcar UK will cover the cost of the first 2,500 swims after the entry fee introduction.
Since its launch, Zipcar has become a popular way to travel to the Hampstead Ponds via a Zipcar Roundtrip, with people taking advantage of the flexibility and affordable access to its wide range of vehicles. Of its fleet of over 3,000 cars and vans Zipcar UK has 82 Roundtrip vehicles in the Borough of Camden alone for members to book in the borough. Their 1,200 one-way Flex cars are available to pick up and drop off in 12 boroughs and at Heathrow T5.
