Bachy Soletanche and Simplex Westpile mark National Apprenticeship Week with 11 new entry roles

  • The celebrated programme offers a range of different apprenticeships across several categories including; plant, piling, civil engineering and quantity surveying, and demonstrates the on-going commitment to up-skilling industry professionals of the future
  • The scheme has a track record of success with three of its current apprentices, Chris Cochrane, Lucy Clark and John Martin, being recognised at the recent Ground Engineering Next Generation Awards, with Chris scooping the Apprentice of the Year award
  • Chris Cochrane, who has been an apprentice with Bachy Soletanche for four years, is undertaking an electrical apprenticeship working on construction plant and electrical installation

Chris comments on the importance of apprenticeships and why he plans to actively encourage new talent into the industry:

The ground engineering industry offers a huge variety of career options for young people. Companies are working hard to raise awareness of the benefits and opportunities in the ground engineering sector, however speaking from first hand experience I can say that it can be difficult for young people to fully understand the variety on offer.

As an electrical engineer I have already had the opportunity to work across a wide range of different projects – providing me with a really credible and strong portfolio only four years in. Choosing an apprenticeship, as opposed to university, has allowed me to gain hands on experience and learn whilst earning. It’s been a really valuable experience and I’d encourage anyone considering a career in engineering to think long and hard about what an apprenticeship has to offer. Bachy Soletanche has been a fantastic foundation for my career and I’m looking forward to many more years on the job learning from industry leading experts.

Chris has been supported by his manager, Bruce Eastaff, mentor Lee Fearnyough and all of the team in the company’s Burscough office. Bruce added:

Chris’ dedication and attention to detail has been there from day one, he’s developed and matured over the last four years and is an asset to the team. He’s growing in confidence every day, always engaging with others and willing to increase his knowledge, experience and skill set. Young talent, like Chris’ is extremely valuable to our industry, so we’re actively encouraging those with an interest in the construction industry to take this opportunity to explore what our apprenticeship scheme has to offer.
