Getaway Brits reveal their formula for the perfect road trip
Sir David Attenborough is the UK’s ultimate road trip companion, whilst Trump comes bottom of the list, reveals study by peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace Turo
The perfect road trip involves a singalong in the car, a detour down a country road, a bag of crisps and the dulcet tones of national treasures Stephen Fry and Sir David Attenborough.
A study of 2,000 drivers has revealed the key components required to create the perfect road trip including UK destinations, the right vehicle and even the ideal passengers.
In a win for the home turf, a third of us Brits (33%) would prefer to road trip within the UK as opposed to going abroad (26%). The survey also revealed that two in ten would like to rack up more than 1,000 miles in one trip, and three in ten Brits would like to take to the open road for more than a week. Over half of us (53%) go on up to three road trips a year.
The Lake District, Land’s End in Cornwall and Snake Pass in the Peak District are the scenic road-trips that come out top with Brits, followed by The Cotswolds and Snowdonia in Wales.
If drivers had to take a road trip with anyone, Sir David Attenborough would be the most desirable passenger, followed by comedian Peter Kay and Stephen Fry, with king of Carpool Karaoke James Corden in charge of the tunes. These British favourites beat the likes of Beyoncé, Emma Stone and Tom Cruise to the passenger seat.
Those surveyed also revealed that American President Donald Trump is the least popular person to share a car with. He’s shortly followed by Kim Kardashian, Katie Price, Russell Brand, Katie Hopkins and Gemma Collins.
The study also found that:
- Regardless of the company, it is rarely plain sailing once you hit the tarmac, with fifty-six per cent expecting to have at least one heated discussion on their trip. These high-speed fall-outs are most likely to be caused by disagreements over which route to take or criticism from backseat drivers
- When hitting the road with a trusted companion, half of us think it is vital that the people in the car have good taste in music – twenty-one per cent have had harsh words regarding the choice of tunes for their trip
- If Brits had the opportunity to pick their perfect road trip ride, a Ford Mustang, Audi A3 or Land Rover Defender would be at the top of their wishlist
When asked about the main reasons for choosing a UK road trip over one abroad, sixty-two per cent of those surveyed want to explore British landscapes because they believe there’s so much still to see on their doorstep. Meanwhile, fifty-eight per cent prefer travelling within the UK as they know the rules of the road.
Brits’ top ten British road trip routes are:
- The Lake District
- Land’s End, Cornwall
- Snake Pass, The Peak District
- The Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
- Snowdonia, Wales
- North Coast 500, Scotland
- The Yorkshire Moors
- The Jurassic Coast, Dorset
- Loch Ness, Scotland
- Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland
Xavier Collins, UK Director of Turo, the world’s leading peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace, which commissioned the study, said: “At Turo, we’re proud to give people the opportunity and freedom to hit the open road whether they own a car not.
