About MorphCostumes

Founded in 2009, and originally called ‘Morphsuits’, the costume brand was created by brothers Fraser and Ali Smeaton and friend Gregor Lawson - MorphCostumes is now the fancy dress phenomenon taking over the world. In 2009, the range of costumes included just six plain coloured Morphsuits. Five years on, the range of costumes has expanded to include: digital designs created by ex-NASA engineer, Mark Rober that integrate wearable smartphone technology to animate the designs, for example Halloween costumes that display real life beating hearts or open flesh wounds filled with maggots. The range also includes Digital Christmas jumpers as well as a host of officially licensed costumes, for example Tetris blocks that use pop-up tent technology, and a gargantuan amount of other varieties in between. 2014 saw the launch of MorphCostumes to pave the way to the next phase of the company’s future and to further cement the brand as the first household name in the costumes sector, following the launch of a new brand identity, advertising campaign, expanded range of costumes, commerce website and, packaging and customer experience. MorphCostumes is passionate about innovation, so there is a huge amount of exciting NPD in the pipeline for later this year and beyond, so watch this space…

MORPHFAMOUS: MorphCostumes launches crowdsourced design initiative to recruit first ever ‘MorphPreneur’ and source costume of the future

Global costume company MorphCostumes, launches design challenge to pool creative talent from around the world by inviting fans to compete for prize worth $50,000 including share of profits from sales of winning design

Morph Costumes, inventors of the famous all-in-one spandex Morphsuit, has today launched ‘MorphFamous’, an entrepreneurial design initiative to promote undiscovered talent across the world. The creator of the winning design will pocket $10,000 as prize money, and also have their design put into production and then sold globally, with them earning a percentage of the profits from the sales of their design, which could be up to $40,000 in the first year.

The MorphFamous investment initiative is the first of its kind in the costume industry, giving a member of the public a chance to sell their designs in a rapidly expanding global market valued at $6bn. In 2013 the launch of the MorphCostumes’ patented wearable technology smartphone app saw the introduction of tech enhanced costumes which have significantly contributed to the company’s growth, and the costume mavericks cite MorphFamous as a strategic tool to pave the way to their next chapter of success.

Gregor Lawson, Co-founder of MorphCostumes commented:

“Innovation and creative design is at the heart of everything we do, and we want to celebrate some of the best undiscovered talent out there in the world. MorphFamous is an opportunity that enables us champion and reward a ‘MorphPreneur’ with global recognition for their incredible design prowess, but also reward them financially by giving them a gateway to a global sales and distribution network and a share of the profits – something which previously would have been almost impossible for them to access to sell their designs through.”

Designers can submit entries into a number of different categories throughout October on the Morph Costumes website, with the public being invited to show their support and vote for their favourites. A shortlist of the 10 designs that receive the most votes will be announced on 24th October and the winning design will be chosen by a panel of judges and announced live on TV just before Halloween on 27th October.

The inspiration for MorphFamous came from years of costume fans sharing their design concepts on the company’s Facebook page, home to over 1.4 million costume fanatics. Last year, a passionate Morphsuits fan called Kyle created a design using a white Morphsuit and posted it on the Facebook page – one year later, MorphCostumes worked with him to create the design and it’s now available to purchase worldwide.

The winning MorphPreneur will work closely with the company’s R&D division: MorphLabs, to develop and bring the costume to market. Headed up by ex-NASA engineer Mark Rober, MorphLabs launched this year to crowdsource next generation costume concepts from a global network of expert designers called Costume Wizards. Mark Rober and a team of costume designers from MorphCostumes, along with YouTube sensation and famous prankster Rahat, will select the winning costume design from the shortlist of costumes determined by the public vote.

Gregor continued:

“Our fans have been a core part of the company’s growth and success and we want to give them a significant role in shaping the future of MorphCostumes. MorphFamous was inspired by the many costume ideas shared by our loyal 1.4 million Facebook fans over the years. Investing in our first MorphPreneur is the perfect opportunity to give something back.”

“Our mission is to drive the direction of the costume industry into new territory by constantly developing and sourcing inspiring ideas that innovate and excite our consumers. With MorphCostumes you get more than your average costume and with ex-NASA engineer Mark Rober also on board, this progression has accelerated with the launch of our patented app technology and MorphLabs development division. For years we have made people the life and soul of the party and now, MorphFamous is our chance to source the costume of the future and make the winner part of the future of the costume industry.”
