The best cellars: International Wine Challenges reveals its Merchant Awards for 2016

The 33rd International Wine Challenge selects the very best wine merchants in the UK

The 33rd International Wine Challenge announced the 2016 Merchant Awards at its prestigious annual Awards Dinner last night, as it recognised and celebrated the dedication of the nation’s top wine traders and suppliers.

  • The big winner of the night was The Wine Society, which took home the IWC Merchant of the Year 2016 prize. As the world’s oldest wine club, its mission has not changed since 1874 – to buy quality wine direct from growers and to offer it to members at fair prices. The club still operates as a cooperative, and is owned exclusively by its members. The Wine Society was also named IWC Online Retailer of the Year.
  • Majestic Wines scooped the prize for High Street Chain of the Year, a huge award for a company that is still changing and evolving. One year into a three-year turnaround plan which included the acquisition of Naked Wines in April 2015, Majestic reported an increase in sales in June. This win recognises the management is absolutely on the right track.
  • After another successful year at the competition, Morrisons took home the Supermarket of the Year prize for the second year running. The IWC judges continued to be impressed by Morrison’s extensive wine range and its commitment to staff training.
  • Rival supermarket Marks & Spencer picked up the Corporate Social Responsibility Award for the second year running, as well as receiving the prize for IWC Own Label Range of 2016. Kings of convenience, The Co-operative Group was named National Convenience Chain of the Year 2016.
  • Hatch Mansfield built on last year’s success, and was awarded IWC Large Agent of the Year for another consecutive year. Daniel Lambert Wines received the IWC Small Agent of the Year.
