International Wine Challenge

The International Wine Challenge announces new UK Restaurant Wine List of the Year Award for 2018 in partnership with Bibendum Wine.

The International Wine Challenge (IWC) is sponsored by premium wine and spirits partner Bibendum Wine, on a new initiative to shine a light on the best wine lists available in the On Trade across the UK. The IWC Restaurant Wine List of the Year Award is a brand-new category that will assess the quality, variety, and value of wine lists at restaurants up and down the country.

  •  Entrants will be scored against set criteria including the range of varieties, countries, regions and wine styles on offer, value for money for the consumer, and the consistency of the information in the wine list. The objective of the criteria is to ensure that the awards showcase the innovation and excellence on offer in restaurants around the country.
  • An initial shortlist for the category will be announced by the IWC on its website on the 4th of June 2018, before the overall winner is announced at the IWC Awards Dinner on 10th July 2018 in London. The competition is now open for entries via the IWC Merchants Awards UK website and the deadline for receiving entries is 11th May 2018.

Chris Ashton, Event Director at the International Wine Challenge said,

“‘The UK is home to some of the world’s finest restaurateurs, who curate outstanding wine lists in order to enhance diners’ experiences at their restaurant– whether it’s the perfect wine to pair with a signature dish or encouraging customers to try something a little more unusual. The IWC UK Restaurant Wine List of the Year Award is all about finding and celebrating the individuals in the industry who are constantly striving for excellence with the diverse range of wines, they have on offer.

“We’re delighted this new award will be sponsored by Bibendum Wine. We are looking forward to announcing the shortlist on the 4th of June 2018.”

Willie Lebus, Bibendum Wine Development Director commented,

“We’re committed to generating more excitement, creativity and innovation in the world of wine lists, which is why we’re incredibly proud to sponsor the IWC UK Restaurant Wine List of the Year 2018. The pressure on restaurants to deliver excellence at all levels, combined with the trend towards drinking less, emphasises the importance of this new initiative. We are very excited to be a part of this new IWC award and together we aim to recognise the best wine lists out there.”

“We believe that a great wine list is all about creating excitement and engaging with the customer. Every restaurant presents a unique challenge. A brilliant list offers a combination of both classic wine styles, and those that diners may be less familiar with drinking. It should offer real value for money, regardless of price point. A great wine list is innovative, original and dynamic, both in terms of content and design.”

This category is a first for the International Wine Challenge, and joins the IWC English Cellar Door Award, launched in 2016, as one of the newest categories in the competition. It marks the IWC’s commitment to constantly evolving its awards and innovating within the wine industry.

The competition is now open, with entries priced at an introductory price of £25 +VAT (standard fee is £75+VAT). Visit for more information.
