Gumtree reveals 58 per cent increase in used-car searches following the launch of new Car Price Index tool

Gumtree, the UK’s largest classifieds site, helps users find their perfect car following increased demand for used motors nationwide

Following a recent report that reveals the value of used-car sales is at an all time record high*, Gumtree, the UK’s number one marketplace for buying and selling private cars, has released new figures showing a dramatic increase (58 per cent) in searches for used-cars on its website in the last year alone** and boasts an average of 17,000 new cars adverts every day.

  • The figures released today follow the successful launch of Gumtree’s Car Price Index (CPI) tool, which aims to put customers minds at ease by allowing them to quickly understand whether a car represents good value for money before making a purchase
  • The helpful tool works by collating data from all vehicles listed on the site over the past 90 days (bought and sold) and categorising them by the make and model, and age collectively
  • The CPI tool also takes into account other variables including the mileage, fuel type and colour of each car, delivering information to users in a simple format, allowing them to make easy searches based on their car needs
  • A recent Gumtree survey has also revealed that nearly half of its customers (43 per cent) consider the most important factor in buying a car to be the make and model, with one in four women declaring that the size of the car is the second biggest decision making factor (24 per cent) when searching for their perfect motor
  • Interestingly, cars in London are the quickest to depreciate in value with the average car losing 76 per cent of its value after the first six years, which is due to the rigors of urban driving
  • Gumtree data also reveals that Scots have it best in terms of car value depreciation, with cars in Edinburgh holding the most value after six years (58 per cent) and  Glasgow following in second place (48 per cent)
  • In March this year, Gumtree celebrated its 15th year in the UK growing to over 13 million monthly visits and 6.5 million listing per month
  • Gumtree Motors recently announced it would be sponsoring all of BT Sport’s coverage of the 2015/2016 Barclays Premier League matches, in its biggest broadcast sponsorship deal to date

Gumtree can reveal the top five used-car models that held the most value after five years (aged 1yr+) were:

  1. Ford KA
  2. Ford Fiesta
  3. Volkswagen Golf
  4. BMW X5
  5. Audi A5

Andrew Hooks, Head of Motors at Gumtree, said:

“Understanding what the right price of a car should be can be tricky especially for older vehicles, so we wanted to take away the stress and confusion as much as possible for buyers and sellers. Now, our users can perform bespoke searches simply and easily in no time at all.”
