Local Leisure Centre manager completes the Welsh Ironman Challenge and raises £14,000 for charity

Earlier this month, David Covey the Health and Fitness Manager at St Crispin’s Leisure Centre completed the Welsh Ironman Challenge; his toughest challenge to date, to raise money for his chosen charity – the national wheelchair charity; WheelPower. The Ironman, dubbed one of the most challenging of physical events, required participants to complete 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 mile of biking and 26 miles of running, all of which David impressively completed in just over 15 hours.

  • Earlier in the year, David took part in the Three Peaks Challenge and after managing to lead 3 teams of very enthusiastic competitors over 3 mountains within 24 hours David and the team raised close to £7,000.00 for WheelPower

Quotations

David Covey, Health and Fitness manager at St Crispin’s Leisure Centre commented:

This has by far been my toughest challenge to date, however with my father’s memory at the forefront of my mind, I was able to keep motivated and push through all of the pain barriers I came across. I am so pleased with the money I was able to raise, which has made my total donation for WheelPower £14,000 since I started fundraising for them. I have already been thinking about a few events I can get involved in next year as well as organise a members and colleagues challenge at the Leisure Centre.

Tony Penge, Contract Manager at St Crispin’s Leisure Centre commented:

David is an inspiration to staff and customers alike.  We’ve seen David train so hard to ensure he was in the best shape for the Welsh Ironman challenge and he raised an inspirational amount of money for WheelPower.  We are looking forward to hearing about his next challenges…
