North Yorkshire Sport launch Olympic Legacy Programmes at Hambleton Community Sport Showcase

County sport partnership North Yorkshire Sport has launched its Olympic Legacy programmes at the Community Sport Showcase at Hambleton Leisure Centre in Northallerton. Preceding the Hambleton District Council Sports Awards the event provided the opportunity for North Yorkshire Sport to expand on the ways that they intend to promote and encourage participation in sport across the region – including initiatives such as Sportivate, Sport Makers and the School Games.

  • Managed by North Yorkshire Sport within the county, Sportivate is a Sport England scheme that launched in 2010.
  • The programme aims to increase sporting involvement in young people specifically between the ages of 14-25 years – particularly targeting those whose might not otherwise be very active in this regard
  • Sport Makers aims to recruit, train and deploy 40,000 new sports volunteers across the country, and North Yorkshire Sport are spearheading the programme in the region.
  • The scheme encourages local sports clubs and organisations to register to become placement providers, creating a variety of volunteering opportunities across a wide range of community sports
  • North Yorkshire Sport has scheduled a series of volunteer workshops, the first of which recently took place on November 28th in Harrogate
  • Finally, The North Yorkshire Sport School Games will bring together schools from across North Yorkshire for a series of competitive events in a wide variety of sports
  • Running for a second year in North Yorkshire, the Games build from internal school competitions to countywide finales
  • As part of the games, the primary school swim event in Scarborough took place on the 1st December

David Watson, Executive Director of North Yorkshire Sport, comments:

We are committed to maximising the momentum, excitement and enthusiasm that the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will generate, so we’re really excited to launch our Olympic Legacy Programmes. We hope that these initiatives will make a genuine impact in local communities to encourage and inspire people to get involved in sport for the Olympics and beyond.
